Carla Cruz is developing at CICS-UBI two studies that have obtained funding from external entities.

The teacher and researcher at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Carla Cruz, leads two investigations in the area of Health Sciences, covering the fields of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and lung cancer. Both studies have obtained funding for the development of the work.

The PAPILOMA project was financed by the Regional Operational Program of the Center, with the support of FEDER and national funds, in the amount of 150.000 €, during the period of one year. The study has the participation of the company Labfit and is entitled "Vaginal gel for topical application in precancerous lesions caused by the Human Papilloma Virus".

In this work, taking place at the Health Sciences Research Center (CICS-UBI), Carla Cruz proposes to develop a gel for vaginal application capable of treating low and high grade intra-epithelial lesions caused by the Human Papilloma Virus.

The other study is entitled "miRNAs biomarkers for lung cancer detection", and received the Dr. Rocha Alves Oncology Research Grant, awarded by the Regional Center of the Portuguese League Against Cancer, worth 10.000 €.

The work includes the participation of the CICS-UBI G4lab team, which belongs to the Biopharmaceuticals and Biomaterials research group and aims to identify new biomarkers (miRNAs) for early diagnosis of lung cancer and develop new methodologies to detect these biomarkers.

The project aims the identification and quantification of biomarkers (miRNAs) in blood of patients with lung cancer at different stages and development of molecular probes to detect these miRNAs.
